Late Autumn Colors

Millennium Park, Chicago. Fall 2010-7

I really love the textures and colors of late Autumn, when the most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, the plants have faded to their subdued hues, and seed pods blow in the wind. Here are some photos I took a couple days ago on my lunch break in downtown Chicago, and today in our garden. Enjoy!

  1. Those plumes on the grasses are so pretty, light and flowy. Great photos.

  2. I can't help but notice the first picture is very much like your blog background... same colors, same variety of textures and busy, active, intriguing.

    Had you noticed that?

  4. Pam-

Thanks! It's really cool to hear the rustling of the dried grasses this time of year.

  5. Hi Dana & Daisy-

You know, I did notice that the color palette was very similar once I posted that! But you're right, the variety and busyness is also very similar. I guess in the back of my mind, I knew that was my favorite color scheme. I also tend to buy clothes in those colors. Hmm, what does that say about me? :-)

Thank you! I like to leave my photos BIG, so people can always go to my Flickr page and view things larger if they want. :-)

  7. Hi Marcie-

It's nice to be able to go outside at lunch and see such pretty scenery. I appreciate that Chicago has tried to add areas like this, because I'm really not a "skyscraper" person! :-)

  9. I love how hosta leaves turn gold in fall. And the spikey purple coneflower seeds add texture but they can be painful too. Nice pix!

  10. Hi Deb-

Thank you for taking the time to visit my site! I found you through A Cat In My Lap. It's so nice what you do for cats, and you're such a great person to love them the way you do. I always say I wouldn't be the person I am without all the cats in my life!

  11. Hi Teresa-

I love the fall colors of hostas, too. We leave all the coneflower stems on all winter. The goldfinches really like them!

  12. Your interesting blog name, made me pop over here, from someone's comments.

What autumnal beauty to be found, so close to a city!

  18. I'm like you, there is nothing like the texturs of autumn. I especially like your macro shots and that you have taken these just outside the city. Illinois is one of my favorite states for antiquing as the people their "live" with their antiques rther rather than just collect. When I was living in Thomason, Ill, we had a huge, Queen Anne and I filled it with beautiful finds. Oh how I miss it. One of the reasons why I enjoy your blog so much, I often feel like I'm back home. Sea Witch

  19. Hi Sea Witch-

How wonderful that you were able to live in a large Queen Anne! I'm sorry that you miss it so. I can only dream of living in a big Victorian house. Unfortunately, the closer you are to the big city, the more out of our price range large houses get! But, I am content in my wee little 1873 farm house. :-)

  20. Hi,

I just want to thank you for this pictures, I love autumn, but i have never had the chance to see by myself those colors and to see the leaves of the trees fall. Your pictures make me feel I was there.

  21. Hi Gloria-

I'm glad you liked my photos. I can't imagine what it would be like to live someplace where autumn is so different. I've lived here my whole life, so I'm used to it!

  22. I was just driving and looking at how beautiful the weeds were in the fall. Fabulous photos. I just about have all the leaves up now, if we don't get a big blow.
    great post

  23. Hi Yvonne-

Thanks! I do think just about everything looks pretty this time of year, even the weeds! You are right, once you think you've got everything up, you always wind up with new leaves on the ground, blown in from who-knows-where.
