Remember Our Fallen War Dead

Memorial Day Vintage Postcard

Memorial Day was first observed after the Civil War. Graves of the fallen soldiers were decorated with flowers and words of remembrance were spoken.

1870-Historic American Sheet Music, "Soldier's memorial day", Music A-2221, Duke University Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library

1867-Historic American Sheet Music, "Kneel where our loves are sleeping", Music B-802, Duke University Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library

1860's-Historic American Sheet Music, "The Soldier's Grave", Conf. Music #368, Duke University Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library

This weekend, take some time to remember those who fought and died for our country.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Yvonne-

I get goose bumps, too. I really like blogs to be all fun and pretty things, but sometimes we must stop to remember these facts of life and death, if just for a moment.

I remember when they actually sold paper poppies on Memorial Day when I was young.
EVERYONE wore one.
I love this country, love our flag and SO APPRECIATE the sacrifice of these men & woman so that we might have the lifestyle we lead here in the U.S.A.

We have a family member over in Afghanistan ....as I type.
And our granddaughter served in Iraq a few years back.

Rose-

The VFW still sells its poppies on the street corners here for Memorial Day.

I thank your granddaughter and family member for their brave service to our country. They are the true heroes.

Beautiful graphics and beautiful words. Here in Riverside we have an annual motorcycle run in honor of those who have given so much for us. Not very Victorian but wonderful and touching to see hundreds and hundreds of bikes as far as the eye can see, many embellished with American flags. Hope you had a great day.

Val-

I agree, bikers can be very patriotic and charitable. They ride through our area as well for Memorial Day to raise money for vets. They also deliver toys for children at Christmas in their annual Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade. A good group of people!

Wonderful post, truly touching. I live near an army instalation and have the pleasure of the sounds, taps, revelry, colors, marching shouting soldiers, I am reminded daily and love the way it grounds me. A very important holiday indeed.

What a unique opportunity to be able to hear the soldiers in their daily practices.
